Mooring Ball Fire Pit

Fireballs: Custom firepits by Sandra Vlock

Connecticut metalwork artist and architect Sandra Vlock creates “Fireballs” custom firepits from steel vintage mooring buoys.

How do we know this? Well, we were fortunate enough to have our hands on a five in the shop this week. The detail on these fireballs is incredible.

Vlock brought the buoys to us because she wanted the final product to achieve a rusted look. Buoys tend to be coated with marine-grade paint which keeps them from rusting. The coating needed to be removed, and the surface prepped.

We took our time blasting each piece carefully, inside and out. As you can see, there were many angles, curves, nooks and crannies to contend with.

Yikes! Newly blasted metal out in the rain no less!! Now thats something you do NOT see everyday at ADS. We never put newly blasted metal out in the elements because rusting/oxidation occurs so fast. However that is exactly what our customer wanted and we aim to please.

From Water to Fire

Vlock has been creating “Fireballs” custom firepits for several years. Her work has garnered attention from The Wall Street Journal to Design New England. She and her team work out of a studio in Stony Creek, CT where they also create beautiful custom fireplace screens.

Every Fireball is made to order. The designs are rendered in the steel using plasma cutting. They come in 28-inch, 40-inch and 58-inch sizes.

We were thrilled to work with Vlock on these pieces, as we always are with regional artists who bring their work with us for blasting and surface prep.

If you have any questions about Fireballs custom firepits, you can contact Vlock through her website.

If you have any questions about how we can help you remove paint and prep a surface for rust or re-coating, let us know.

Tongues of Fire by Jerome Harris Parmet

Metalwork & Art: Sculpture Jerome Harris Parmet

Art research is a thing around here!

The latest piece is this one, called “Tongues of Fire” brought to us by way of Arts Westchester.

Still doing some digging, but it seems it is the work of award-winning New Rochelle metalwork sculptor Jerome Harris Parmet, probably held in private collection.

After years of interior architectural design, Parmet took up his lifelong dream to create steel sculpture.

Parmet sculpts mostly in steel, he said in an interview, occasionally with wood or glass.

Marcia Spivak Equine sculpture

Remembering Marcia Spivak

We’ve been meaning to share with you a pretty special job we had the honor to complete here in our shop last year.

Back in February, we heard about the passing of award-winning equine metal sculptor Marcia Spivak.

Ms. Spivak lived in Wilton, Conn., but her work lived all over the world. Shortly before her unexpected passing last year, she completed a 8×10-foot commission called “Qianli Ma” for Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Horse.

In our shop, we got the privilege of blasting a smaller, but equally impressive work. The sculpture was crafted in steel and had been displayed outdoors. The metal had oxidized considerably over time. The owners wanted to clean and prep the surface for a new, more appropriate outdoor coating.

We partnered with our good friends at Composition Materials to use the right bead blasting materials. Even though steel is strong, you can see that the metal had suffered and been weakened by the elements. Our guys worked carefully to ensure just the right pressure and angle of blast.

Spivak studied originally at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and always loved horses. She started riding when she was 6. She moved to the East Coast in her 20s and fell in the love with the beautiful Wilton area.

It was there she started sculpting with metal, studying under David Boyajian at the Sculpture Barn. She sculpted for 16 years, selling almost all of her work, pieces from tabletop size, to larger than life.

She did all of the welding herself, often building the piece from scrap materials she reclaimed from other artists or found in junk yards.

We were sorry to hear of the loss of Marcia Spivak, a great metal artist, and grateful to have been able to help restore some of her artwork.
