Choosing powder coating color

Choosing the right powder coat color is simple… and it isn’t.

There’s no wrong choice for powder coat color, if you choose the right applicator for the job. The first step is understanding that applying powder coat is a complex process.

Unlike liquid paint, powder coating is a dry powder that is applied electrostatically and then cured under heat.

Tips for Choosing Your Powder Coat Color

There are literally thousands of colors, textures and finishes in powder coating. You are not limited to “black” or “gray”.

One customer recently brought us his motorcycle rims. In order to achieve the finish he wanted, it required four layers of powder coat. He was so thrilled with the results, he drove back to show our team the results.

When you are ready to select the color for your job, you can follow these steps to help you choose:

  • Scan the Prismatic Gallery for a job or color that you like
  • Discuss with our Powder Coating professionals the finish, texture, and effect that you want
  • Narrow the selection and finalize your color choice with our team.

Below is just a sample of the range of colors we have available.

These are jobs we completed in the last year or so, in our shop. You can see the types of jobs we do, including automotive, motorcycles, patio furniture, radiators, vintage metalwork, industrial and more.

Why Choose Powder Coating?

Powder coating is durable and protects from future corrosion and rust. That only works, however, if the coating is applied evenly and is cured properly. If this is not correct, the only color you will be seeing is rusty red.

Our team ensures coatings are applied evenly and our curing oven temps and times are correct. We inspect all work before sending it back to you.

  1. I have always wondered what the difference was between industrial coatings and normal paint. It is cool to know that is a dry powder that is applied with electrostatic and then heated up. It does seem like that would really make the paint durable. It seems like it would be smart to check with the BBB on people who do a good job because it seems like it would be tricky to apply the coating properly.

    1. Hi Penelope:
Thank you for commenting on our blog post for this topic. We agree that in many applications powder coating offers a more durable protective layer than paint. Another important advantage is that powder is VOC (volatile organic compound) free making powder environmentally friendly. Finally, due diligence is always a good option before you make a purchase of any type. Here we welcome any and all inquires about our processes so our customers are fully informed and can have confidence in the project outcome whatever that project may be. Thank you again for your comments.

  2. I love that you mentioned powder coating is durable and protects them in the future from rust and other corrosion. My husband and I are looking for a metal powder coating company that can help his company with their industrial products. 3. I liked that you explained that you will need to consider the finishes of a powder-coated material. I didn’t realize that you could change the texture of the paint job. Personally, I would want to see and feel examples before choosing a finish.

    1. Hi Ivy….Thank you for your comments. We give all our powder coat customers the opportunity to look at test coupons of colors and finishes like textures and wrinkles if we have them in stock. Choosing color and finish is very subjective and personal. We work closely with our clients to explain options. In the end, the final choice comes from an informed, knowledgeable customer and who is very happy with the project outcome. Stay safe.

  4. I am so happy to know that powder coating isn’t just limited to black and gray. I think a ton of people just assume that you can only get those too colors because that’s all everyone ever told me. I will look for a place that has powder coating in different colors so I can make my parts look however I want.

  5. Thank you so much for giving me such a beautiful article. Here I have learned about powder coating color and the benefits of powder coating. In fact, this article is very important for everyone.
