Rust will march on, unless …

Metal_Chair Before & After

Your patio set may have o ly a bit of wear and tear now, but rust has a way of making itself known.

Rust loves those winter months, under cover, taking over and damaging the beautiful metal you have invested in.

Whether it’s a vintage set or one you bought from Lowe’s, removing surface rust and powder coating is the best way to protect your investment.

Why Dry Abrasive Blasting is Best to Refinish Outdoor Furniture

There are plenty of DIY projects to keep your busy this winter. You are going to want to give refinishing patio furniture a pass.

Why? Because it is time and labor intensive when using DIY products to sand and remove rust and coatings.

Dry abrasive blasting is economical. And it’s a far more efficient way to get into those nooks and crannies than with your fingers and sandpaper. There will be spots you just can’t reach without the right nozzle, the right psi, and one of our experienced blasters.

Our team knows how to remove coatings without damaging the metal.

So pile that patio set into the back of your minivan and drop it off to us, or give us a call and we can pick it.

What about the finish?

After our experienced team of blasters removes the coating and surface corrosion, we get to the really fun part.

We offer you a shocking range of colors and will finish your outdoor furniture set with a powder coating finish. You will hardly recognize it as your own when it’s done!

If you aren’t familiar with this technique, powder coating uses electro-static technology to apply finely ground pigment to metal. The powder adheres to the surface until melted and fused into a smooth coating in our curing oven.

The result?

An exceptionally durable, uniform, high-quality, environmentally safe, and beautiful finish.

Ready to go? Drop us a line while the sun shines and we can give you an estimate on cost and time.

1910 White Steam car Model O-O from Jay Leno

Working on a 1910 White Steam Model O-O

1910 White Steam car Model O-O from Jay Leno
1910 White Model O-O

Back before petrol/gasoline became the main fuel for automobiles, there was plain old steam.

The first “substantiated” use of a steam “carriage” as they were called was a-waaayyyyy back in 1815. These would have been external combustion engines and for years were, by and large, experimental. That is, until the 1880s with the rise of large scale manufacturing.

So needless to say we were pretty happy to see parts of our first White steam car in the shop: a 1910 White Steam Model OO frame.

Frames are a tough part of restoration, because they are so awkward to handle. Plus, you need a BIG curing oven to get the coating on these large frames correct. Our curing oven at XTC fits frames up to 18 feet long by 7 feet wide.

1910 White Steam Car Model O O Frame sandblast
1910 White Model O O Frame in our shop

History of the White Steam Car

The 1890s was the big decade for the steamers, with White Motor Company of Cleveland — a subsidiary of White Sewing Machine Company — being one of the bigger names. The steam engine cars were built through 1910 but petered out with the development of the electric starter.

White began producing gasoline powered automobiles in 1910, and stopped production of steam automobiles in 1911, after having made and sold 9,122 White Steamers. Only 9,122.

The company remained in business merging and under various names (CLETRAC, INC and EUCLID, INC.) until the 1985. The bulk of the White truck plants were bought in 1981 by Sweden’s AB Volvo.

What it Takes to Restore a Frame

The dimensions and the weight of these frames make them a bit tricky to blast and coat, but our team got the job done.

Let us know if you have a frame — or any other part of your resto — we can help with, from blasting and bondo removal to ceramic and powder coating.

If you want to check out a complete restoration of a 1910 White Model O-O, here’s one from Jay Leno’s (very extensive) garage. Of course, Leno has his own fabricators in-house but we don’t. When something needs fabrication around here, clients get referred to Mark or Steve at The Panel Shop in Stratford.

Well, we are big on collaboration. So here is a little of what we do to ensure your project turns out exactly the way you expect.

  1. We listen. We start with carefully listening to or reading your request.
  2. We ask questions.
    • What is your overall goal?

DID YOU KNOW: Once you expose metal, all except for the highest quality stainless, oxidation begins. Getting metal in primer or some finish coating is critical, especially in the humid summer.

    • What material is your job made of?
    • What size is it? How heavy is it?
    • How will you get it to the shop?
    • What is your timeframe? There are times of the year when we are busier than others. We will let you know that and give you an honest estimate of how long it will take from drop-off to pick-up/delivery.
    • Do you want or need pickup/delivery service?
    • Where are you located?
    • After the product is blasted, would you like it ceramic or powder coated? We provide coating services onsite through our partner, Xtreme Temperature Coatings.
  3. We provide answers. Sometimes our clients are not sure what the best solution for their job is. We offer our 30+ years of expertise to offer the best answers.
  4. ADS Sales order What is the process for sandblastingWe draw up a work order. Our Operations Director, John Gurrieri, manages the shop and prioritizes jobs through the work stations.
  5. We provide you with an estimate. In most cases, your final cost will match the estimate. If there is a change in the cost (because of some unforeseen issue with the job), we will call you to discuss how you would like to proceed. We will never move forward if the price becomes substantially different than the estimate. The choice is ALWAYS yours.
  6. We contact you with changes to the job or with any clarifying questions, throughout the process.
  7. We complete the job.
  8. We place your item in appropriate storage until you pick it up.
  9. We contact you.
  10. We invoice you. Our admin, Sarah Granger, will bill you and ensure you are happy with the service you receive.
  11. We will ask how we did. At any point, we welcome your reviews and feedback. You can submit a testimonial to us, or review us online and share your happy experiences with others.

At American Dry Stripping, we have served thousands of happy customers over the years. We are more than happy to serve you too. Let us know how we can help.

What Mom REALLY wants for Mother’s Day

What mom really wants for mothers day
Yeah… it probably got left out this year, right?

Right about now you are trying to figure out what to get your mom or the mother of your children for Mother’s Day.

Here’s some help.

What your Mom really wants for Mother’s Day is NOT:

  • Brunch
  • Flowers
  • Breakfast in bed
  • An artful arrangement of fruit
  • A gift certificate to the nail salon or her favorite climbing gym

Now hold on…

She will enjoy all of those things and love you for them. But what your mom really wants for Mother’s Day is to be able to take something OFF of her crazy long to do list.

Because Mom is the doer of ALL the things that you forget need to be done and that get done magically around the house, and in life.

The Mom job just never stops. Not even if you go to the spa.

Patio Chairs
Patio chairs blasted here, ready for new coating.

So when she actually does take time off to scale walls or soak her cuticles, how can you help to be sure she will return even more relaxed?

Blast Her To Do List

One thing most definitely on her list is getting the outside ready for the summer. That most definitely includes a set of “well-loved” patio furniture that may or may not have made it into the shed back in November.

So here’s your true way to Mom’s heart.

A checklist for what mom really wants for Mother’s Day:

  • Collect up all your metal patio furniture and bring it to us for stripping and re-coating(Or call us to pick it up).
  • Be sure to find out what color she wants… Classic black? Or maybe she’s ready to go with turquoise or yellow? Bring a sample and we can match it.
  • Rake up the flower beds and re-mulch (You can have mulch delivered by the yard from our neighbor, Grillo’s).
  • Sweep off the deck, driveway and patio and power wash the dirt away. Check the siding for areas that need powerwashing too.
  • Clean and repair any of her favorite windchimes.
  • Got yard art or metal birdbath? Bring metal masterpieces to us for rust removal and cleaning.
  • Clean up the firepit. Bring your old metal firepit to us for cleaning and rust removal and recoating.
  • Order/organize wood for the firepit to have on hand!
  • Dig up all those wayward maples and sycamores that are growing where they shouldn’t be.
  • Clean and/or replace your welcome mat.
  • Ditch any old, broken pots.

If you are looking for extreme bonus points, you can even take down the screens and storm windows and clean them too.

We know you love your mom (or the mother of your children)! That’s why we want to help you treat her right this year.

If you have any questions, give us a shout. (Note: we do not know your mom’s shoe size).

Downtown Hotel Syracuse chandelier restoration

Hotel Syracuse Lighting Restoration by Grand Light

When it comes to metalwork and architectural restoration, one of our most diligent and professional partners is Grand Light in Seymour, CT.

They recently brought us a number of large, ballroom chandeliers for dry abrasive blasting. The fixtures were part of a much larger Hotel Syracuse lighting restoration project that Grand Light had undertaken.

The chandeliers had 27 arms each with multiple bands (75 lights each). The diameter on these beautiful grand ladies is six feet, arm to arm.

Grand Light Chandeliers Syracuse5

Grand Light worked on more than just crystal-encrusted chandeliers. Ryan Stockman and his team have been consulting and working with the GCs since June 2015 to complete work on lobby, ballroom, terrace lighting fixtures. These included sconces, flush mounts and chandeliers.  This was an extensive job of researching, logistics, wiring, coating, packaging, transportation and much more.

Mooring Ball Fire Pit

Fireballs: Custom firepits by Sandra Vlock

Connecticut metalwork artist and architect Sandra Vlock creates “Fireballs” custom firepits from steel vintage mooring buoys.

How do we know this? Well, we were fortunate enough to have our hands on a five in the shop this week. The detail on these fireballs is incredible.

Vlock brought the buoys to us because she wanted the final product to achieve a rusted look. Buoys tend to be coated with marine-grade paint which keeps them from rusting. The coating needed to be removed, and the surface prepped.

We took our time blasting each piece carefully, inside and out. As you can see, there were many angles, curves, nooks and crannies to contend with.

Vlock Buoys in rain at American Dry Stripping
Before: Vlock Buoys in the rain!
custom firepits
After: Vlock Buoys ready to rust.

Yikes! Newly blasted metal out in the rain no less!! Now thats something you do NOT see everyday at ADS. We never put newly blasted metal out in the elements because rusting/oxidation occurs so fast. However that is exactly what our customer wanted and we aim to please.

From Water to Fire

Vlock has been creating “Fireballs” custom firepits for several years. Her work has garnered attention from The Wall Street Journal to Design New England. She and her team work out of a studio in Stony Creek, CT where they also create beautiful custom fireplace screens.

Every Fireball is made to order. The designs are rendered in the steel using plasma cutting. They come in 28-inch, 40-inch and 58-inch sizes.

We were thrilled to work with Vlock on these pieces, as we always are with regional artists who bring their work with us for blasting and surface prep.

If you have any questions about Fireballs custom firepits, you can contact Vlock through her website.

If you have any questions about how we can help you remove paint and prep a surface for rust or re-coating, let us know.

Nothing likes to gather rust and oil quite like the cast iron exhaust manifolds in your old car’s engine. So to make these look really great again — many times even better than new — bring them to our shop for restoration.

What to do when you are ready to restore exhaust manifolds

  1.  Burn off. We use our high-temperature burn-off ovens for items like these V-8 exhaust manifolds. Baking them at a high temp effectively removes all surface grease and oils and any that may have, over the years, soaked into the metal.
  2. Prep is key to finish. To finish, we media blast the manifolds inside and out to remove years of rust and grungy and add a profile to the surface for optimal adhesion of finish coat.

After blasting, all parts are stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled room until pick-up. Or we can ensure you get the right performance coating you want, right away after blasting.

Sandblast Jeep

Jeep: Resto or Rebuild?

Sandblast Jeep
Jeep bed in the Shop for dry abrasive blasting

We’ve got some Jeeps coming and going from the blast booth these past couple months. We don’t always get the low down on the owners plans for the vehicles.

If you are the owner of an older stock Jeep, you are also the owner of some rust and corrosion. (Especially if you’ve been driving it off road!) That means you will definitely want to blast and re-coat at some point.

But this may also be the time to restore or rebuild your beloved 4-wheel. So the question is: Jeep: resto or rebuild?

In Four Wheeler Network, Bob Worthington talks about his Jeep resto, a 1967 CJ-5 V-6.

Parts, Pampering and Price

Bob had to deal with the reality of no automatic anything in the old Jeep that glowed so happily in his memory (including no power steering). He also came up against the issue of no new parts, since the CJ-5 had not been made since the ’80s.

He also realized how high the cost of a true restoration is.

“The rebuilding process allows much more leeway because almost any component that fits and works can be used to make the vehicle stronger, faster, more nimble, or better able to perform specific off-road tasks.

“Restoring … is a much more difficult job. In the process of making the vehicle like new again, it must also be as close as possible to when it originally exited the factory. A top-of-the-line restoration is referred to as museum-quality, meaning the restored vehicle is a replica of what originally appeared on a dealer’s showroom floor.”

Crist Clapper Jeep Wagoneer 1990 Restore
Crist Clapper’s 1990 Jeep Wagoneer 1990 Restored

This is why true automotive restorations (and the people who complete them) are so impressive. A restored Jeep — or any vehicle — is not merely a puzzle of parts that just “make do.”

Restoration means dedicating oneself to the original components and design of the car, exactly the way it was new.

And considering the sheer number of parts to any given vehicle, that is really impressive.

Go ahead and take a look (and get your scroll finger ready!)

Why We Sponsor

Here is Gary Joneses 1968 Dodge Dart, at a CT Seaport Car Club event.

Their calendar is up to date with winter activities, as well as the first “green” (when you see the calendar, you will know what we mean!) event of the 2016 season on April 17: the Alpha Phi Delta Car Show, to benefit Special Olympics of CT.

It is not a mystery to us that despite the fact that modern cars are generally more efficient, cleaner, safer, faster than the oldies, people love classic cars! Classic cars are the perfect storm of nostalgia, innovation, beauty and function.

Thanks to CT Seaport Car Club for their great work.

Tongues of Fire by Jerome Harris Parmet

Metalwork & Art: Sculpture Jerome Harris Parmet

Art research is a thing around here!

The latest piece is this one, called “Tongues of Fire” brought to us by way of Arts Westchester.

Still doing some digging, but it seems it is the work of award-winning New Rochelle metalwork sculptor Jerome Harris Parmet, probably held in private collection.

After years of interior architectural design, Parmet took up his lifelong dream to create steel sculpture.

Parmet sculpts mostly in steel, he said in an interview, occasionally with wood or glass.

Media Blasting Classic Cars: 1969 Roadrunner

More media blasting classic cars in the booth this week. For all our MOPAR lovers out there, take a look at this bad boy:

Media Blasting Classic Cars (sandblasting) 1969 Roadrunner
No doubt the owner of this ’69 Plymouth Roadrunner has plans for some heavy duty cruisin’ this summer. He brought this in, prepped and ready for media blasting recently.

Media Blasting Classic Cars - (sandblasting) 1969 Roadrunner

A “Blast” from the Past: The 69 Roadrunner

The 1969 Roadrunner is such a fun story. First, it was the ultimate econo-racer, popular in its 1968 launch year, despite low sales projections.

Also, its name was cross-promoted using the famed Warner Bros. characters (apparently not a popular idea at first.) The Roadrunner’s image was decaled on the car, and the horn even imitates the bird’s famous “Beep Beep”.

The brand synergy worked and in 1969 Motor Trend named this model the Car of the Year.

Media Blasting Classic Cars (sandblasting) 1969 Roadrunner
Notice our media blasting suit? No that is not a Dr. Who character!

So, with over 82,000 units of the 1969 Roadrunner, this isn’t a rare car, per se. But the Roadrunner followed the GTO in mass production of mid-sized, econo street racers that followed the arc of the supercar boom.
