Rust will march on, unless …

Metal_Chair Before & After

Your patio set may have only a bit of chipped paint now, but rust has a way of making itself known. Rust loves those winter months, under cover, taking over and damaging the beautiful metal you have invested in.

Whether it’s a vintage set or one you bought from Lowe’s, removing surface rust and powder coating is the best way to protect your investment.

Why Dry Abrasive Blasting is Best to Refinish Outdoor Furniture

There are plenty of DIY projects to keep your busy this winter. You are going to want to give refinishing patio furniture a pass.

Why?

Restoring outdoor furniture at home is extremely labor intensive using DIY products to sand and remove rust and coatings.

Dry abrasive blasting is economical. And it’s a far more efficient way to get into those nooks and crannies where your fingers don’t reach. Our experienced blasters know how to remove coatings without damaging the metal.

So pile that patio set into the back of your minivan and drop it off to us, or give us a call and we can pick it.

What about the finish?

After our experienced team of blasters removes the coating and surface corrosion, we get to the really fun part.

We have literally thousands of powder coating colors to choose from.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Vintage-Chair-Before-After-ADS-2022-1024x858.png

With such a shocking range of powder coating colors to choose from, we guarantee: you will hardly recognize it as your own when it’s done!

If you aren’t familiar with this technique, powder coating uses electro-static technology to apply finely ground pigment to metal. The powder adheres to the surface until melted and fused into a smooth coating in our curing oven.

The result?

An exceptionally durable, uniform, high-quality, environmentally safe, and beautiful finish.

Ready to go? Drop us a line while the sun shines and we can give you an estimate on cost and time.

Powder Coating for Radiator Restoration

Flawless finish. Dramatic look. Durable, long-lasting color

We get so many calls from around the country asking us: can you help me find a cast-iron radiator restoration company in my neck of the woods?

Why?

Because dry abrasive blasting — paired with expert powder coating — (when they are done right!) are simply the best solution to restoring old radiators.

By the way: we know from experience that doing it right isn’t easy.

We also know you love the warmth your old steam radiators give you on cold wintry days. So we’ve worked hard the last 10 years to develop the very best solution for restoring them.

Why choose powder coating over paint for vintage radiator restoration?

Antique Radiator restored powder coated antique bronze

The answer is simple. Water, when mixed with metal makes RUST. Once the original coating on your cast iron radiator is compromised, there will be spots of rust eating away at the metal.

Now these old dinosaurs have layers of peeling of paint. And you’re tired of endless cover-up chores just to make them look halfway decent. It’s exhausting.

In order to protect these beauties, it’s imperative to get every nook and cranny dry media blasted clean. Our team has the muscle, machinery, and know-how to get it done right.

But it doesn’t stop there. Once the beasts are blasted, they need to be coated properly to ensure water doesn’t invade. When these radiators were coated last time, paint was the only option.

Instead of trying to hide a lumbering eyesore from the guests you invited over for dinner, let us help you restore your radiators to their original distinction.

With the right color and finish, your radiators could blend into the background or intentionally stand out, enhancing your room’s vintage vibe.

The fun part? You get to choose the shade and finish from thousands of durable, long-lasting powder coating colors. Leave the final step of restoring your grubby looking cast iron radiators to our coating team.

Best of all, powder coating is made to withstand radiant heat. Your radiator will look and perform better than new.

When Should You Bring in Your Radiators?

Before and After Cast Iron Radiator Restoration

Radiator-restoration season starts with the robin’s first song and wraps up in September! And they pile up in our shop fast. So reach out early to get your beauties blasted and ready before the leaves fly!

Don’t let pool time distract you! Call us to schedule pick up and delivery for your radiators’ summer glow-up. You can have them stripped of all that old paint and corrosion and looking gorgeous just in time for sweater weather.

We specialize in cast iron radiator sandblasting and powder coating.

Using our expertise in surface preparation, we remove rust and corrosion in order to create flawless, even finishes. Our mission is to provide the best cast iron radiator restoration services in the North East.

Applying Powder Coating Color

Choosing powder coating color

Choosing the right powder coat color is simple… and it isn’t.

There’s no wrong choice for powder coat color, if you choose the right applicator for the job. The first step is understanding that applying powder coat is a complex process.

Unlike liquid paint, powder coating is a dry powder that is applied electrostatically and then cured under heat.

American Dry Stripping™ & Xtreme Coatings helps people with all of their powder coating service needs. We are located in Milford, CT near New Haven and offer a convenient pick-up and delivery service in New York including Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Tips for Choosing Your Powder Coat Color

There are literally thousands of colors, textures and finishes in powder coating. You are not limited to “black” or “gray”.

One customer recently brought us his motorcycle rims. In order to achieve the finish he wanted, it required four layers of powder coat. He was so thrilled with the results, he drove back to show our team the results.

When you are ready to select the color for your job, you can follow these steps to help you choose:

  • Scan the Prismatic Gallery for a job or color that you like
  • Discuss with our Powder Coating professionals the finish, texture, and effect that you want
  • Narrow the selection and finalize your color choice with our team.

Below is just a sample of the range of colors we have available.

These are jobs we completed in the last year or so, in our shop. You can see the types of jobs we do, including automotive, motorcycles, patio furniture, radiators, vintage metalwork, industrial and more.

Why Choose Powder Coating?

Powder coating is durable and protects from future corrosion and rust. That only works, however, if the coating is applied evenly and is cured properly. If this is not correct, the only color you will be seeing is rusty red.

Our team ensures coatings are applied evenly and our curing oven temps and times are correct. We inspect all work before sending it back to you.

Powder coating vs. painting

Powder Coating vs Painting: What to Choose

Powder coating vs painting

One of the most common questions we are asked is: What is the advantage of choosing powder coating over painting?

Here’s the answer.

Contact us to learn more.

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is dry powder that comes in thousands of shades and colors. It is applied to a product’s surface. It adheres due to an electrostatic charge being applied to the powder and the product your powder coating being grounded.

Powder coatings tend to be applied in heavier coats in comparison to paint. After application, we cure powder coating in an oven. This completes the application process and helps protect the surface.

The powder can be made of any number of products: polyester, polyurethane, polyester-epoxy, straight epoxy, and acrylics. The powder coating finishing process yields a thick, hard finish that is tougher than conventional paints. Powder coating is commonly found on household appliances and automobile parts.

The Advantages of Powder Coating over Liquid Paint

Powder coating may be chosen for application over liquid paint for one key reason: durability. If powder coating is applied by an expert applicator, its heavy coat makes it more resilient to scratches, weather, and related issues.

This makes it ideal for automotive parts finishing, architecturalpowder coating vs painting rims uses and outdoor furniture and railings, for example. It’s also become popular on the restoration of vintage radiators for its longevity.

In addition, powder coating has a smaller impact on the environment. When applied, it is not exhausted into the air which makes it less harmful to the atmosphere. The powder can also be recovered and reused if a powder recovery booth is used.

When to Choose Paint vs Powder Coat

With all the benefits of powder coating, paint has its advantages. It tends to be less expensive initially, especially with larger parts. Paint can also achieve a finer finish than powder coat. Liquid paint can be touched up as well, which makes it easier to repair.

Additionally, certain types of appearances can be hard to achieve with powder coatings like metallic coatings compared to liquid, which is why automobile body finishes are generally not powder coated.

What is best for your application?

Deciding between powder coating vs. liquid paint can be a difficult decision. Feel free to to consult with us and we can help you consider all of the possibilities with special detail to the needs of your company, your customers, and your product.

So we do get asked, can you powder coat wood? More often than you’d think!

The answer: It depends on the wood! As most folks familiar with powder coating know, the product you want to coat has to be able to accept a charge… and wood is notorious for rejecting electrical charge. However, fiberboard (known as MDF) is an exception.

Although we do not PC MDF in the shop, it can be done by manufacturers.

Aluminum Eagle Blasted Cleaned

Common applications include polished, brushed, raw & anodized aluminum used in architectural, automotive, industrial, consumer goods and more

Formulated in a one-part, air-cure, easy-to-apply coating with excellent adhesion and UV stability,  this clear coating excels in all applications.

This product is 100 percent an inorganic formulation and is therefore completely UV stable. It will not yellow or haze.

How we Prep for Coating

Whether your item is currently coated, new or old, we will ensure it is prepped correctly for perfect coating adherence.

Aluminum is a soft alloy so we are careful in blasting to ensure it never overheats or warps. We remove all grease and prior coatings before bringing the products into our coating shop for new coatings.

New Methods, Better Protection

When the original finish has gone to the dogs, there’s no good reason to stick with old or original methods of coating. Powder coating looks great, is extremely durable, and protects metal from rust.

A beautiful silver-veined, vintage radiator restored with powder coating

Powder coating vintage items provides a true, lasting finish that brings out their beauty and will protect the historic items for years to come.

Powder Coating Saves You Money

Without a doubt, you can run to the Depot and grab spray-on rust protector and a can of paint to “get the job done.”

Not only will this approach incur the mess and stress that any DIY project brings, but remember: paint is wet. It runs, and it takes days to dry and cure.

Powder coating is cured within 20 minutes of removal from the curing oven.

From Blast to Finish

All of our jobs start with the correct and best method for surface preparation, including dry media blasting for total removal of prior coatings, using the right grit, angle and pressure to ensure no damage to the item.

In our 35 years in business, we’ve seen every kind of item through our doors… almost anything you can imagine.

Surface Prep Lexan Boxes
Surface preparation to these Lexan boxes creates a frosted look.

In powder coating, we work with you to ensure you get the color you want. Powder coating uses electrostatic charges which attract the powder to the metal. This ensures consistent thickness and total coverage.

But it’s after you bring it home that you will see the real benefit. Powder coating stands up to environmental stresses and requires less touch ups.

In powder coating vintage items, the value is in the long term. Investing in a coating that will protect the item makes sense now, and pays off.

How To Protect Metal After Abrasive Blasting

Abrasive blasting is a safe and efficient method for removing old surface finishes like painting, powder coating or chroming, passivation processes such as anodizing, or plain rust or corrosion from all types of metal surfaces in preparation for a finishing application.

Abrasive blasting works on virtually any type of metal (or fiberglass) object: from patio furniture to car parts, to create a surface profile range from smooth to rough.

American Dry Stripping™ & Powder Coating helps people maintain their metal after blasting to look better than new. We are based in Milford, Connecticut with two locations to serve customers in metropolitan New York and surrounding counties, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Contact us to learn more.

The desired surface profile is achieved because of combinations of grit size, type and abrasive qualities of the media. Before abrasive blasting, metal parts must be cleaned to remove contaminants like dirt and grease that could end up in the blast media, embedded into metal surfaces, or could interfere with the final painting or finishing process.

Protecting Blasted Metal Surfaces

Here at American Dry Stripping, once the surfaces of your project are blasted clean, the metal is exposed to the ambient environment.

Over time — in an uncontrolled environment — exposed metal oxidizes (aluminum and stainless to lesser degrees). This jeopardizes the integrity of the newly stripped surface.

To effectively protect the integrity of your project, measures must be taken.

Protect metals after abrasive blasting with powder coating or ceramic coating

The clean, rust-free metal that remains needs to be treated as soon as possible after abrasive blasting. This prevents re-rusting (which will occur rapidly if any moisture is present).

Prevention is always better than a cure, and once we remove the rust, we always recommend taking the necessary measure to avoid a recurrence. By using a protective coating on your metal parts, you can ensure that they are protected from oil or grease.

You can apply the acid solution with an old paintbrush or rag. Just douse it on liberally, and let it run into seams and crevices. When the acid dries, the metal surfaces with have a dull gray color. If you need to store the parts temporarily before painting, place them in a dry a location as possible.

If longer storage is planned, the parts should be primed with a non lacquer-based primer. A lacquer-based primer allows moisture to penetrate the the metal’s surface, causing re-rusting.
