Metal_Chair Before & After

Your patio set may have only a bit of chipped paint now, but rust has a way of making itself known. Rust loves those winter months, under cover, taking over and damaging the beautiful metal you have invested in.

Whether it’s a vintage set or one you bought from Lowe’s, removing surface rust and powder coating is the best way to protect your investment.

Why Dry Abrasive Blasting is Best to Refinish Outdoor Furniture

Dry abrasive blasting is economical. And it’s a far more efficient way to get into those nooks and crannies where your fingers don’t reach. Our experienced blasters know how to remove coatings without damaging the metal.

So pile that patio set into the back of your minivan and drop it off to us, or give us a call and we can pick it.

What about the finish?

After our experienced team of blasters removes the coating and surface corrosion, we get to the really fun part.

We have literally thousands of powder coating colors to choose from.

With such a shocking range of powder coating colors to choose from, we guarantee: you will hardly recognize it as your own when it’s done!

If you aren’t familiar with this technique, powder coating uses electro-static technology to apply finely ground pigment to metal. The powder adheres to the surface until melted and fused into a smooth coating in our curing oven.

The result?

An exceptionally durable, uniform, high-quality, environmentally safe, and beautiful finish.

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is dry powder that comes in thousands of shades and colors. It is applied to a product’s surface. It adheres due to an electrostatic charge being applied to the powder and the product your powder coating being grounded.

Powder coatings tend to be applied in heavier coats in comparison to paint. After application, we cure powder coating in an oven. This completes the application process and helps protect the surface.

The powder can be made of any number of products: polyester, polyurethane, polyester-epoxy, straight epoxy, and acrylics. The powder coating finishing process yields a thick, hard finish that is tougher than conventional paints. Powder coating is commonly found on household appliances and automobile parts.

The Advantages of Powder Coating over Liquid Paint

Powder coating may be chosen for application over liquid paint for one key reason: durability. If powder coating is applied by an expert applicator, its heavy coat makes it more resilient to scratches, weather, and related issues.

This makes it ideal for automotive parts finishing, architecturalpowder coating vs painting rims uses and outdoor furniture and railings, for example. It’s also become popular on the restoration of vintage radiators for its longevity.

In addition, powder coating has a smaller impact on the environment. When applied, it is not exhausted into the air which makes it less harmful to the atmosphere. The powder can also be recovered and reused if a powder recovery booth is used.

When to Choose Paint vs Powder Coat

With all the benefits of powder coating, paint has its advantages. It tends to be less expensive initially, especially with larger parts. Paint can also achieve a finer finish than powder coat. Liquid paint can be touched up as well, which makes it easier to repair.

Additionally, certain types of appearances can be hard to achieve with powder coatings like metallic coatings compared to liquid, which is why automobile body finishes are generally not powder coated.

What is best for your application?

Deciding between powder coating vs. liquid paint can be a difficult decision. Feel free to to consult with us and we can help you consider all of the possibilities with special detail to the needs of your company, your customers, and your product.

Stripped metal patio furniture awaiting powder coating

Restoring & Refinishing Patio Furniture

To refinish metal patio furniture it's best to use abrasive blasting first.

When you are ready to refinish metal patio furniture

Okay, say you find a set of cool old metal or cast iron patio furniture by the side of the road or on Craigslist.

Or maybe you find your OWN set of metal patio furniture or iron bench under the snow!

When you are ready to refinish metal patio furniture, it is important that you make the right start.

You need to get down to bare metal without damaging it, causing pitting, or ending up with caustic and damaging chemicals leaking out of drain holes later.

American Dry Stripping™ & Xtreme Coatings helps people with all of their metal furniture restoration needs. We are located in Milford, CT near New Haven and offer a convenient pick-up and delivery service in New York including Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Contact us to learn more.

Sandblasting Before You Refinish Furniture

The first step to refinishing metal patio furniture is to start with a professional dry abrasive blasting job or service. Why?

How many of those “How to Refinish Metal Patio Furniture” articles and wikis have you read? Almost every one suggests:

  • chemical strippers
  • powerwashing
  • scraping paint
  • wirebrushing the paint
  • sanding the metal
  • treating the rust
  • using caustic products like naval jelly (acid)

You can spend the money investing in these toxic chemicals, scrapers, and equipment. Then you can spend the time to DO the job (don’t forget the clean up!).

Result? You will not get the smooth finish that professional abrasive blasting gives you.

Abrasive media blasting Sandblasting American Dry StrippingThe Best Reason to Use Blasting to Refinish Patio Furniture

The better the surface preparation, the better (and longer!) the paint or powder coating adheres to the surface of the metal.

What we do is sometimes referred to as “sandblasting” or stripping. Our methods of blasting don’t include sand anymore. Instead our experienced blasters determine what kind of metal and corrosion needs to be removed and select the best abrasive media for the job. This includes any of our jobs like restoring old cars or prepping wheels for powder coating.

Of course you could try to strip the metal yourself.

But the time and effort and — most of all — the less-than-desirable result could really discourage you and set you back a season.

That’s the best reason to use professional abrasive blasting for your job.

The pros make quick work of your patio furniture job. When you are ready, we can get the ball rolling to refinish metal patio furniture.

So what about the finish?

Patio furniture requires high-quality outdoor paint or powder coating and a meticulous hand.

Why?

Sun, rain, snow are all hard on metal! To ensure you won’t have to repeat this coat job again next year, we recommend a professional powder coating service.

We offer in-house powder coating for metal patio furniture. Bring it in to us to ensure you protect your outdoor furniture investment.

What Mom REALLY wants for Mother’s Day

What mom really wants for mothers day
Yeah… it probably got left out this year, right?

Right about now you are trying to figure out what to get your mom or the mother of your children for Mother’s Day.

Here’s some help.

What your Mom really wants for Mother’s Day is NOT:

  • Brunch
  • Flowers
  • Breakfast in bed
  • An artful arrangement of fruit
  • A gift certificate to the nail salon or her favorite climbing gym

Now hold on…

She will enjoy all of those things and love you for them. But what your mom really wants for Mother’s Day is to be able to take something OFF of her crazy long to do list.

Because Mom is the doer of ALL the things that you forget need to be done and that get done magically around the house, and in life.

The Mom job just never stops. Not even if you go to the spa.

Patio Chairs
Patio chairs blasted here, ready for new coating.

So when she actually does take time off to scale walls or soak her cuticles, how can you help to be sure she will return even more relaxed?

Blast Her To Do List

One thing most definitely on her list is getting the outside ready for the summer. That most definitely includes a set of “well-loved” patio furniture that may or may not have made it into the shed back in November.

So here’s your true way to Mom’s heart.

A checklist for what mom really wants for Mother’s Day:

  • Collect up all your metal patio furniture and bring it to us for stripping and re-coating(Or call us to pick it up).
  • Be sure to find out what color she wants… Classic black? Or maybe she’s ready to go with turquoise or yellow? Bring a sample and we can match it.
  • Rake up the flower beds and re-mulch (You can have mulch delivered by the yard from our neighbor, Grillo’s).
  • Sweep off the deck, driveway and patio and power wash the dirt away. Check the siding for areas that need powerwashing too.
  • Clean and repair any of her favorite windchimes.
  • Got yard art or metal birdbath? Bring metal masterpieces to us for rust removal and cleaning.
  • Clean up the firepit. Bring your old metal firepit to us for cleaning and rust removal and recoating.
  • Order/organize wood for the firepit to have on hand!
  • Dig up all those wayward maples and sycamores that are growing where they shouldn’t be.
  • Clean and/or replace your welcome mat.
  • Ditch any old, broken pots.

If you are looking for extreme bonus points, you can even take down the screens and storm windows and clean them too.
