Abrasive Media Blasting (aka Sandblasting) : How this Process Will Benefit Your Restoration

Whether you’re restoring a classic car, trying to bring life back into your old outdoor furniture, clean up old fashion radiators or metal artwork or you are an industrial metal fabricator, powder coater or construction company, abrasive media blasting is the safest, most effective and cost efficient way to strip off old paint or powder coating, welding burn, rust and/or other types of corrosion from all types of metals, alloys and fiberglass. In the past, many restoration projects took months or even years to complete because metal parts had to be scrubbed with wire brushes using old-fashioned elbow grease or soaked in harsh chemicals in order to bring a hard surface back to or close to its original state. Abrasive media blasting virtually eliminates these processes and allows for a more efficient, effective cleaning. No matter what your project, there are many ways that abrasive media blasting and can benefit you.

What is Abrasive Media Blasting (aka sandblasting)?

Abrasive bead blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface, or remove surface contaminants. A pressurized fluid, typically air, or a centrifugal wheel is used to propel the blasting material (often called the media). The first abrasive blasting process was patented by Benjamin Chew Tilghman on 18 October 1870. There are several variants of the process, such as bead blasting, sand blasting, soda-blasting, and shot blasting. The abrasive media blasting process, which is achieved with a variety of ecologically and “green” friendly media including plastic or glass bead, natural or synthetic mineral, aluminum oxide, walnut shell or corn cob, and other types of blasting media propelled through a high-pressure tool or blasting cabinet, can easily strip old paint, rust, and other kinds of surface blemishes or imperfections. Auto frames, panels, and even engine parts often need deep cleaning during the restoration process, and glass bead blasting is one way to accomplish this. Unlike wire brushes or toxic abrasive cleansers, most types of abrasive blasting media are safe to use when the right safety measures are taken and will not ruin the original surface of the metal. Scrubbing and using thick cleansing material will often scrape or gouge the metal, and these imperfections are usually very difficult to cover up. The result is an imperfect or poor restoration that wasted both time and money. However, with abrasive blasting, the media quickly strips away old paint, rust or other surface contaminants with precision, but it does not abrade (unless intended) the metal underneath.

The Benefits of Bead Blasting

When you bring your restoration project to American Dry Stripping, we select from a wide variety of abrasive blasting media tailored to your project to strip off old paint, remove rust and/or other contamination so you have a clean metal template and can powder coat or add primer to the original metal. Glass bead blasting is currently a popular method of stripping aluminum car parts of paint or any kind of corrosion because this leaves you with a surface that’s clean and polished. Our technicians also have the ability to control the force and angle of the blasting, which means a more thorough and effective cleaning. The media we use reaches even the smallest of spots and crevices. Abrasive blasting also saves you time and money because of how efficiently the media strips away old paint without damaging the original metal, which means less surface repairs.
